Along with most Western European languages, English and French derive from proto-Indo-European. French � like Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, and Catalan � is a Romance language, which descends from proto-Italic via Latin; English � like Dutch, German, and Yiddish � is a Teutonic language, which descends from proto-Germanic via West Germanic.
French and English branched off the Indo-European family tree a long time ago, but the complicated history of English and French's role in this history create some interesting issues in French/English translation. English is often described as a Germanic language with a Romance vocabulary.
Politics.co.uk says this was used to justify thousands of deportations as the Home Office claimed that everyone who had taken the TOEIC test conducted by ETS had committed fraud. The Financial Times reported that it is not clear how many people were deported, but more than 30,000 test scores were considered suspect.

MISKOLC, Hungary (Reuters) - Thousands of Hungarians protested on Wednesday against reforms of the education system by Prime Minister Viktor Orban's center-right government that they consider oppressive and heavy-handed.
The protesters say the reforms are yet another example of what they see as Orban's authoritarian style of leadership that has drawn criticism from the European Union and the United States as well as human rights groups within Hungary.
The Orban government, in power since 2010, took control of schools from local authorities three years ago and a central body now regulates all aspects of education, down to procuring chalk for rural elementary schools.
It has significantly increased teachers' workload and set a new curriculum using textbooks the critics say contain factual errors and promote very conservative views on issues such as homosexuality.

Similar words that have evolved easily mistakable meanings are trickier and often mistranslated, such as actually/actuellement ('currently'), eventually/eventuellement ('possibly'), or to attend/attendre ('to wait').In short, due to the vagaries of history, French/English translation is generally less complicated than translation between other language pairs.
