I support music education because it has played a vital role in my life. I had very difficult behavioral challenges as a child. I was defiant. I was expelled from three schools and was hospitalized three times because of mental, emotional and behavioral challenges. I was diagnosed with depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, and a behavior disorder.

If your child's first language is not English, he or she can
still become an excellent English reader and writer. Your
baby is on the way to successful English reading if she is
beginning to learn many words and is interested in learning
to read in her first language. You can help by supporting
her in her first language as she learns English. Talk with
her, read with her, encourage her to draw and write. In
other words, do the same kinds of activities just discussed,
but do them in your child's first language.

At the end of tenth grade, my defiance was at its peak and contributed to my third expulsion from school. Like a defiant child, I told my parents that I was not going back to school unless they found a way for me to play the drums more during the school day.

When you do meet, tell the teacher the things that you are
doing at home to strengthen your child's speaking and
reading in her own language. Let the teacher know how
important you child's reading is to you and ask for support
for your efforts. Children who can switch back and forth
between languages have accomplished something special. They
should be praised and encouraged as they work for this
achievement.

Education IS a privilege. Just as Freedom is. Education is what keeps people free. Education is what allows people to think and question and criticize and improve the world. You might think that changes are needed in education now, and I agree with you. There is always room for improvement, so there will always be a need to look at ways to do things better.

When your child first enters school, talk with her teacher.
Teachers welcome such talks. They even have sign-up times
early in the year, though usually you may ask for a meeting
at any time. If you feel that you need some support in
meeting with the teacher, ask a relative, neighbor, or
someone else in your community to go with you.

* Conflicts with a co-founder who doesn't see things your way. That "vision" you both were so excited about when you joint-ventured to start the company isn't so 20/20 anymore. What you thought was a joint vision suddenly feels a little wall-eyed. Or maybe one of you is wearing horse blinders!

Teacher trainees have been protesting the cuts around the country for the past few months, and the response from security forces during some demonstrations has been violent. Riot police were scattered along the route of Sunday's march.

Not so long ago in the United States of America, some people were not given the same access to the same education because of the color of their skin. Up until fairly recently, women also didn't receive the same level of education in many countries.

There are different ways to be educated and sometimes, what you need doesn't come from High School the way it is now. But whatever form of education you get is useful, if you are prepared to receive it.
Don't take it any more for granted than you would take Freedom for granted. Make sure your kids know that and realize how grateful they can be to be going to school every day. They get the chance to develop a thinking mind. If you think school is not good enough, then propose your solutions, but don't undermine it.
