Issues in development or developmental delays may not be seen until years later but may have been initially caused by the TBI. Unlike adults, children are still developing, making these injuries even more devastating and potentially crippling in the long term.
Extensive research has shown that TBI in early childhood can induce a period of significant decreased cognitive, social or behavioral skills which is followed later by a "stall" (possibly years later) during which failure to develop cognitive, behavioral, or social skills affects learning and the ability to maintain friends, relationships and a career.
